Annapurna Poonhill Trek

Trip Description

This is an adventure through diverse picturesque scenery, from paddy terraces to the high alpine terrain, with constant views of the worlds highest mountain range including Annapurna, Manaslu and Dhaulagiri. We hike through serene verdant forest of rhododendrons, charming villages full of life and the ancient Trans-Himalayan Trade route".This truly inspiring adventure passes through a more diverse range of climate, vegetation and cultures than any place in the entire Himalayan world, from the lush verdant green vegetation of rain and temperate forests to the terraced rice fields and to the alpine zone, making this trip more tantalizing with an introduction to Nepals cultural and natural beauty.

The Journey to Annapurna begins from Pokhara, a scenic spot & famous for its lakes. The trail leads towards dense forest of rhododendrons and magnolia passing through rain forest and a gorge between massive green hillocks that give us great views of our surroundings.

The blissful journey concludes in the City of Lakes…Pokhara…thats ideal for chilling out after completing our trip.

Group Size and Guide Ratio

We take a maximum of 16 clients on the trip. There will be an English speaking leader or guide and a team of Sherpas to cater for the groups needs.

Our Trekking Day

We will be walking for 4 to 7 hours every day, depending on trails and altitude with some rest and acclimatization periods. The daily routine begins at around 6 a.m. with tea and washing water brought to your tent and rooms. Please get packed promptly so that the Sherpas can start taking down the tents (For camping trek) and packing up your baggage, while you are having breakfast. Take your day pack with you to breakfast. The morning walk will be about 3 hours and there is no need to hurry. The lunch stop lasts about 1 to 2 hours and is a good time to do your laundry, write your diary etc. Then we walk for another 2 to 3 hours to our evening stop. Tea and biscuits awaits you and a few hours later dinner and evening reading, cards, drinking, etc.

Best Season

Autumn (Sept to Dec) and spring (March to May) are the best seasons for the Annapurna Poon hill trek. The weather is sunny and warm, with outstanding views but the nights are little cold. Winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) is also good for GEBC trek although it will be little colder.

Baggage Allowances

We always recommend that you dont allow your baggage to exceed 15 kilograms that should include your clothing & personal equipment. This is not only cumbersome for you but is also added weight for the porter or even the plane that carries your load. This is the maximum weight permitted for human carriers & even the machine that carries you & your load. 15 kg is considered to be the safe load for porters carrying your baggage across tough terrain to dizzy heights. In avoidable circumstances, TNT will not be responsible for any extra charges made for excess baggage & the risks involved. Travel light is what the wise trekker would do to enjoy a lovely hike in Nepals sublime mountains…it simply makes you feel better.

Equipment

You are advised to consider the following equipments as essentials while packing for the trip.

FAQ

WHAT HAPPENS IF UNEXPECTED PROBLEMS OCCUR

Unpredictable problems can occur anytime when out in the wild, however, no one wishes for it. TNT have hardly experienced any problems except on two occasions in 02 decades. Most of our treks are led by proven professionals who are mountain Sherpa & our fully organized Teahouse/camping treks are led by veterans whove been to some of the toughest regions in the country. For both kind of ventures, your guides are tried & tested people who spot a problem & take all steps to prevent it. These leaders are skilled enough to ensure you are on the safe side of the fence at all times & will enjoy a memorable outing in the wild.

What should I know about rescue evacuation?

No one wants to comprehend any untoward incidents occurring but at TNT we prefer to hope for the best & expect the worst to avoid all disappointments; however, if an unfortunate incident does occur in the course of our adventure which may appear in any form of flight delays, illness & bad weather on any route of our trek, & if rescue evacuation is required, our trained mountain crew are all geared to provide any assistance that will be required on the spot.

What are sherpa crews?

At TNT, our Sherpa crews are critical to the success of your treks & climbs that you do with us. We us professionally trained Sherpa guides & sirdars who are just not hikers & climbers on the mountains but have been trained to perform this task with a lot of common sense & guile. We ensure that they are confident & experienced in leading ventures into some of the most isolated parts of Nepal. Most of our guides were born in these parts & have relatives living on other parts of the regions where they were born in.

What should I know about visa and passport?

All foreign visitors who wish to trek in Nepal require a valid up to date passport for all treks & tours listed. Your passport must have a validity of at least for 06 months till the completion of your trip. For a sure & secure booking & avoiding additional charges; information provided to us on your booking form must match identically & be the same as mentioned in your passport. A visa is a must for all foreign nationals entering Nepal & India. For Nepal its pretty convenient because you can simply fly into Nepal & get your visa at the airport in Kathmandu. Additional visas will be required if you are to cross the border into Tibet & Bhutan; its important to note that visas for Sikkim, Darjeeling in India & visiting India must be obtained in advance before you enter this country. If you wish to visit India we will provide you all the details in Nepal & will even help you with the process, however, commonly, visa applications should be made 2-3 months in advance prior to your date of departure. TNT can arrange your visas for Tibet & Bhutan when you are in Nepal. Of course, we will require your passport details at least 04 weeks prior to your visit to these countries, even more time in the case of Tibet which is china. Even more time is required if you are planning some extreme adventures into remote areas of Tibet, it is important to make a mental note of this, planning is the key to all your holidays, just let us know early. We do our best to ensure speedy visa arrangements which is subject to how early you let us know; but you must also note we will not be held responsible for visa problems occurring due to embassy mistakes or potential delays, changes to regulations or any unforeseen actions by border officials that go beyond our control. TNT will go the length & mile to ensure all of your visa arrangements are done on time…so be prompt & help us to help you more efficiently

What should I consider about health?

Health facilities, hygiene and disease risk vary worldwide. The area you are traveling through is safe and is not affected by any kind of health hazard. There are no statutory requirements unless you are arriving from an area designated as infected by cholera or yellow fever. We recommend vaccinations against polio, typhoid, tetanus, and hepatitis A. Please consult your doctor or vaccination centre for up to date information. Though malaria is not endemic in the Kathmandu valley and mountain and hilly region, it is advisable to take malaria prophylaxis if you are passing though India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. A combination of Paludrine (Proguanil) and Chloroquine are recommended for this part of South Asia. Sleeping tablets are very dangerous at high altitude as it depresses your respiratory system.

And about Insurance?

Its mandatory for us to advise all of our clients to insure themselves before heading to an extremely adventurous destination like Nepal. It is absolutely important that you do this, no matter what. We will also ask you to show us copies of your insurance when arriving in Nepal, which will obviously be prior to your trip. Insurance should be especially obtained for helicopter evacuation in the event of any kind of AMS development; your insurance should also cover accidental injury, inability to continue your venture to higher altitudes, cancellation, death & repatriation etc. It would also be wise to get your insurance to cover for evacuation in the event of being stranded in any remote airfield or location due to real bad weather conditions. Remember, your holiday trips will be occurring in some of the most rugged territory on earth where some Nepalese dont ever get to see a vehicle for most of their lives due to inherent inaccessible conditions…but of course, most of this is changing…however slowly, for the good of everyone, especially those living in such regions of Nepal. The beauty hereabouts is unimaginable, but the land can be punishing if we arent prepared for it. Visit the HH website for more detailed information on trips that you may intend to choose, it will give you more insights into the areas you will be visiting.

Do I get to meet the local folks?

At TNT its a mandatory policy that you always get opportunities to interact with the local folks & where possible, even share a meal with them. This is a greater advantage with us because wherever possible, we provide you with guides who were born or related to the particular area you are going to trek into. On arrival in Kathmandu, after youve rested you meet the guides who will accompany you throughout the whole course of your trip into these massive mountains; & right from the beginning, you develop a sense of camaraderie & feel secure. Most of the trails you use are traditional routes used by the local tribal people & you will bump into them most of the way & even step right into their villages. When staying in teahouse lodges, most of the lodge owners are local folks who are connected with the guide & porters you use & this will give you immense opportunities to strike up a chat with the local folks to understand their lifestyles in some of these most rugged parts of the world. Some of them may also invite you into their homes for some local barley beer {chhang-fermented from barley or also rice & considered healthy on these tough mountains} because its made from pure locally grown ingredients. Some of the local folks even offer a cup of pure yak butter tea thats really best for the body in these cold mountains as you go chatting with the family members & learn of their cultures & traditions that date back for centuries…its amazing in these parts of the world!! This will give a fantastic idea of the warm & friendly hospitality of the local folks in the course of your journey that will surprise you on how these local folks live in year out throughout their lives in some of the harshest conditions on earth. TNT will ensure that you meet all the different tribes who stay on the trails that you walk in for weeks or even months on end…

How much money is required for a trek?

Take about Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 15,000 or more if you intend to buy a lot of souvenirs or consume alcoholic beverages. The money you take with you on the trek needs to be in fairly small denominations because many of the village shops will not have large amounts of change. You should take one, two, five, ten, twenty, twenty five, fifty and one hundred rupees notes. Give Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1,500 for tips at the end of the trek to trek leaders to divide equally among the staff.
